Snowwhite & Sherazade

Snowwhite & Sherazade is het derde deel van het drieluik van Ellen Schippers over vrouwbeelden.

Zij werd voor deze tentoonstelling geïnspireerd door haar bezoek aan Aleppo in Syrië, waar zij deelnam aan het International Women Art Festival 2010.

De positieve ontvangst van haar werk, dat de verhouding man-vrouw op zijn kop zette, verraste haar. De ongemakkelijke waarheid werd door mannen en vrouwen eerder als een sprookje dan als een bedreiging beleefd.

Schippers besloot zich daarop te verdiepen in de Oosterse sprookjes en al bij één van de eerste verhalen uit 1001 Nacht kwam zij een heel ander beeld over vrouwen tegen dan zij had verwacht. Het verhaal ging over een vrouw die was opgesloten in een glazen kist en die steeds aan haar bewaker wist te ontsnappen om andere mannen te veroveren.

De tegenstelling tussen dit actieve vrouwenspinsel van Sherazade en de passieve dromerigheid van Sneeuwwitje vond zij verrassend. In Snowwhite & Sherazade plaatst zij deze twee vrouwbeelden tegenover elkaar en gaat zo de dialoog aan tussen Oost en West. Zij doet dit met behulp van twee video installaties en Stills uit deze video’s, die ogen als impressionistische schilderijen.

Besloten opening: 13 april met een inleiding van Christiaan Vogelaar, hoofdcurator van het Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal in Leiden

Frauensehnsucht is the second edition of a triptych about gender. The exhibition will take you on a journey through a mysterious space along video installations with theatrical images, music and poetry. The main theme is the woman, who is longing to escape from her image and fixed gender roles.  And about the contradiction between image versus authenticity.

Ellen Schippers is a multi-disciplinary artist, who combines wearable sculptures, performance, dance, music, light and poetry in theatrical video-installations. She creates a “fantasy” world that is continuously bursting at the seams.
Her work is about gender, like stereotypical male and female images, ideals of beauty and about the contradiction between image versus authenticity. Schippers strips fixed images by inflating and deconstructing them and reveals the authentic emotions that are hidden behind these selfmade images.

Schippers has presented Live Performances on location in galleries, in theatres, at cultural institutions and festivals like:  De Kleine Komedie, De Brakke Grond, Panama, Escape, The Melkweg, Mazzo, Maison Descartes (French Cultural Embassy) and the Vondelpark Open Air Theatre in Amsterdam, the Hippodrome Theatre in Londen, the World Science Fiction Congress and the Wiener Sommer Symposion in Vienna. Seducing visitors with powerful images and plunging them into a suggestive atmosphere.

Background

Ellen Schippers was educated in textile art in Amsterdam, in performance-art and textile art at the Vrije Academie of The Hague and in video at Open Studio in Amsterdam.

Since 2009 Schippers is a member of the Artist Society Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam

Collaboration

Schippers has collaborated in projects with various artists such as Penck, Mirko Krabbé and Peter Giele; the poets George Moorman and Arthur Lava; the composers Bo van de Graaf (I-Compani) and Hans Asselbergs.

Her work was photographed among others by Erwin Olaf, Angèle Etoundi Essamba, Wim van de Hulst and Cindy Marler.

The Dutch television shows Het Klokhuis, Backstage, Special Report, and Rok&Rol broadcasted specials portraying Ellen Schippers. Her work have appeared on Dutch television as well as abroad: Tineke, Catherine, Spijkers, Breakfast, TV Club, Firma Onrust (VPRO), Studio NL, Union Libre (France 2), German Nightshow, NDR 3 and Klim Op (BRT).

Metamorfose was an item in the Dutch RTL news show and Seven Faces of Women embellished the cover of the Uitkrant.

In the past few years, Ellen Schippers has been interviewed by daily newspapers and monthlies such as Volkskrant, Parool, Trouw, Nieuws van de Dag, Algemeen Dagblad, Spits and HP/De Tijd. Articles and photo reports also appeared in magazines like Uitkrant, Avantgarde, Cosmopolitan, Viva, Gaykrant, Oor and Roof.

And Italian Marie Claire, Donna and Dove, the English Skin and Two and the American Mondo 2000 featured Ellen Schippers’ work.
